Caitlyn

Caitlyn Cardetti
President

Caitlyn is a Ph.D. candidate in Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology. She is studying mitochondrial RNA processing in Dr. Daniel Bogenhagen’s lab. Outside of lab, she enjoys being on the trails whether that’s running or hiking, yoga, and reading. In the past, she’s been involved in science outreach through Pint of Science, Taste of Science, and New York Academy of Sciences. Last year she served as GWiSE’s media and event coordinator.

Mikaela Dunkin
Vice President

Mikaela is pursuing a Ph.D. in Materials Science & Engineering as a member of the Takeuchi Research Group. Her work focuses on using synchrotron-based characterization techniques, like X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS) and Energy Dispersive X-ray Diffraction (EDXRD), to better understand thick battery electrodes. When she’s not running experiments at the National Synchrotron Light Source II, she enjoys horseback riding, acroyoga, and learning krav maga. Last year she served as GWiSE’s website and blog administrator.

Ali

Alison McCarthy
Secretary

Ali is a Ph.D. student in the Materials Science & Engineering. She is a member of the Takeuchi Research Group, which focuses on battery chemistry research and technology. When she has the time, she enjoys reading, practicing yoga, and eating cannolis. She currently is a chapter liaison for She’s the First, where she works with campus chapters to further girl’s education in low income countries. Ali is returning to her role as GWiSE’s secretary from last year.

Gabby Moody
Treasurer

Gabby is a Ph.D. Candidate in the Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology program with an interest in Neuroscience. She is studying how subtle genetic changes can lead to Epilepsy in the Wollmuth-Hsieh lab. Outside of lab she enjoys attending the GWiSE book club!

Emma

Emma Mumper
Event Coordinator

Emma is a Ph.D. student in the Clinical Psychology Department. She studies risk factors that contribute to the etiology of psychopathology. She also works with psychophysiological measures to study developmental trajectories of reward systems. Emma enjoys traveling with friends, and she also loves swimming, skiing, and painting. Emma is returning to her role as GWiSE’s event coordinator from last year.

Roshni Patil
Event Coordinator

Roshni is a 2nd year Ph.D. student in the Physics and Astronomy Department. She works in the Plasma Accelerator Laboratory under the supervision of Professor Navid Vafaei-Najafabadi on developing laser-plasma wakefield accelerators. She loves animals and enjoys swimming, running, biking, and exploring new places.

Stephanie Taboda
External Affairs

Stephanie is pursuing a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering at Stony Brook University under the guidance of Dr. Devinder Mahajan and Dr. Jose Rodriguez. She is currently optimizing catalysts for the production of renewable natural gas (RNG) through carbon dioxide hydrogenation as well as RNG utilization for the production of synthesis gas via dry reforming of methane. In her spare time, she enjoys salsa dancing, reading, going to the gym, and traveling.

Charuta Pethe
Technical Coordinator

Charuta is a Ph.D. candidate in the Computer Science department. She works in the Data Science and Analytics Lab with Dr. Steven Skiena, on natural language processing techniques for social media and long texts. In her free time, Charuta enjoys sketching and painting, playing badminton, and swimming.

Sydney Snaider
Technical Coordinator

Sydney is a Ph.D. candidate in the Molecular and Cellular Biology Program. She works in Dr. Patrick Hearing’s lab, where she studies regulation of DNA damage repair during infections with Adenovirus. Although she has many interests outside of science, she is most passionate about hiking and swimming.

Elizabeth Inman
Website and Blog Administrator

Liz is a second year Ph.D. student in Social/Health Psychology. A member of the SPICE lab, she studies intimate partner violence and sexual/reproductive well-being. Liz is originally from Massachusetts and enjoys dancing, cooking, and playing with her kitten, Gloria Estefan-Steinem (Glo for short).

Shruti

Shruti Iyer
WISE Mentorship Coordinator 

Shruti has a Bachelors in Genetic Engineering and a Masters in Molecular Biology and Human Genetics. She is currently a PhD Candidate in the McCombie Lab at the Cold Spring Harbor Genome Center, where she uses Long-Read Sequencing technologies to gain insight into complex human diseases like cancer and neuropsychiatric disorders. Shruti is also a United Technologies STEM U mentor as part of the Global STEM Alliance by the New York Academy of Sciences. She loves to travel, writes short stories and poetry, enjoys the theatre, and is a major foodie! Shruti is returning to her role as GWiSE’s mentorship coordinator with WISE from last year.
